What kind of lifestyle do you want? If you're satisfied to live on your own in a modest apartment in a working-class neighborhood, drive a used economy car, and shop at Wal-Mart more often than Whole Foods, the number is a lot smaller than if you're supporting three kids and a similarly non-working spouse, living in a large single-family house, and hiring a maid and gardener to look after your place. For me personally, "not needing to work" would mean living completely on interest rather than eroding my principal, since I hope to have a long life, and it would mean being able to do so using extremely low-risk investments with high immunity to market volatility.
Of course, low-risk means low-return as well; I would assume something like a 2.5% annual return (inflation-adjusted) which means that I would need a principal base of about 40x my desired annual income. At the end of the day, I think people who study creativity (like myself) tend to realize that it isn't all that mystical, and questions like the one you ask are very constructive and can yield great benefits. In my view, creativity can definitely be learned and developed, and I would contend that much of the individual differences in creative achievement have more to do with temperament, personality, and luck, than inherent differences in creative capacity from a cognitive standpoint.
