Our asteroid strikes the seafloor at 39,000 mph or more. The solid earth does slow it down but, it doesn't stop it until it has burrowed some 10-15 miles into the oceanic crust which is thinner than continental crust. The ocean impact vaporizes billions of tons of seawater and still vaporizes billions of tons of crustal rock. Some of that rock is thrown high into space where it falls from with near orbital velocity many thousands of miles from the impact point, igniting widespread fires in forests, plains and cities. If one of the bollides happens to strike an oil producing area, it could ignite the entire oilfield. An asteroid impacting the earth anywhere is bad, very bad. We are the first species on this planet capable of changing its own destiny, capable of preventing its own extinction. But, we can't do that if we remain earthbound. In order to stop an asteroid or comet from destroying our planet we must become a spacefaring race.
Archosaurs are a branch of diapsid reptiles that include non avian and avian dinosaurs, as well as crocodilians. Archosaurs and other diapsids are very distant from mammals. The two large groups, Diapsids (archosaurs and lepidosaurs) and Synapsids (mammals and mammal like reptiles) diverged from each other millions of years before dinosaurs evolved. Computer modeling of a type well verified on used on living animals for example show that the largest ever discovered dinosaur could have been a full 25% heavier before reaching the limit of what its body plan could carry in normal earth gravity.
