The Southern perspective, by and large, isn't something that needs to be understood. People get it. There isn't much need for a nuanced understanding of how the majority of rural American Southerners think and feel on any given subject. It isn't like rural Southerners are some complex prism of light-bending medium that produces a spectrum of beautiful color, if only Northerners had the visual capacity to detect it.

It's much simpler than that: most Southerners are perpetually backwards, and it's no longer as endearing to society as it once might have been.
I was born, raised and have lived nearly every day of my life in the South (Coastal Georgia), and there are things about this region that I am immensely fond of, yet I no longer view our collective with the same high estimation of my youth. The country has moved on, and Southerners have chosen to remain, for the most part, deep in a past they still maintain is as charming and winsome as it ever was.
