I had to do this when a child was watching porn at night; I’d had the talks, had forbidden it in the home, out of my own dislike for one thing, but mostly because I had two very young daughters still in the home, and had been through a marriage based on sexual abuse in the family; I wasn’t, couldn’t, and wouldn’t have pornography movies and mags in my home, no matter how well they were hidden. It wasn’t easy, and if I could have found some way to make the child listen, I would have, but nothing worked, and my young daughter being exposed to that stuff was, to me, not an option. I was miserable, but couldn’t go back on it, even if I wanted to; I turned a few mothers totally against me, who held me in very strong judgment, but it was what it was.
A good example would be catholic Ireland during the last century wherein the active train of thought in terms of sex was that it was sinful to even think about it. What is repressed must be expressed, often resulting in child abuse, child rape, incest etc. Many such issues ruptured out into the collective conscience of catholic Ireland at the turn of the last century as wave upon wave of reports surfaced involving child sex abuse, rape, infanticide, and incest involving catholic clergy. Tens of thousands of vulnerable children were stigmatised and physically and emotionally scarred as a result of these behaviours. Incest within families was rife in Ireland as were cases of young females getting pregnant and having to abscond to Great Britain for abortions as a result of the stigma of sex outside of marriage and birth control being illegal in Ireland up until 1985.
