I believe that any premise imaginable can be made into a great movie that audiences will love. Great movies are about interesting, engaging characters in situations of conflict that get resolved in an interesting and compelling way? You want to do an Anaconda movie? Fine, but you’ll need your own story and title if you don’t want to pay for the rights to the original. Budget? Budget schmudget. You can make a great movie for less than $50,000. But your screenplay will be very different than if your budget was $50 million.
One of the best movies I’ve seen this year is Baby Driver. It was low budget, for Hollywood, no A-list stars, not a sequel or adaptation of anything. Just a great, original script. Another gem, Get Out, was done for $5 million, no A-list, B-list, or even C-list actors. And it was amazing. Meanwhile, the worst movie of the year for me, and in fact the worst movie, dollar for dollar, that I’ve ever seen is Transformers: the Last Knight. A sequel. Great cast. Mark Wahlberg, major star, Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins. They spent $217 million to make it, and it’s a massive, massive turd - though the special effects are quite spectacular.
