I like that movie, too! Interestingly enough, there is some perhaps unexpected historical accuracy in the movie with regard to the bizarre behaviors of some of the Indians portrayed. The Contraries were real Indian tribal roles. They lived their lives backward, or at least counter to the ways of their fellow tribesmen. Also, the character of Little Horse, the “two-spirit” or “heemaneh” character who dressed and acted feminine, is based on an actual dual-gendered role that existed in several tribes. These and a couple of other slightly less accurate historical depictions (Custer and Hickock, for instance) makes for good watching, even if you don’t agree with its heavy-handed anti-war themes.
The reason why I am glad to answer is that I think that “The Cure” is one of the best and most underrated movies of American filmography of the last thirty years. It suffered especially because of authoritative reviewers who were looking for messages important to them, or silly details, or flaws in the first work of new movie Director (and a new screenplay writer). Above all, they (and the public itself) were probably shocked, but did not dare to tell it, because the Director dared to deal with the ultimate American taboo subject, that of death.
