Nearly all laminates that I'm familiar with (and I am familiar with a lot of them) do not use glue, only Gravity, to hold it down to the base floor. Now, in-between the laminate floor and the base floor there is a "floating" layer, usually some type of soft padding, and then an additional layer of water vapor impermeable plastic sheet, to prevent moisture from the base floor affecting the laminate floor too much. Sometimes the flooring comes with the padding already attached, but you should still use a vapor barrier.
If the sound of the laminate floor bugs you- people sometimes complain of the loud, hollow "tik-tok" sound of shoes on laminate- you can glue it down with similar adhesives that are used on some installations of traditional honest-to-goodness wood floors, but remember that it will increase the installation costs dramatically (one 5 gallon bucket of adhesive will easily be +$100), AND the glued-down floor is nearly impossible to remove 5 years from now when you are tired of it and want to make a change. Gluing it down will negate what I think is some of the best qualities of laminate flooring: Easy DIY installation, and easy removal when you are ready for a change.
