Something that I can guess from your question is that your friend is not happy with his current developer job. He is already a software developer but still wants to get a developer job. I would advise him to grow on his current position and don't neglect the fact that the best Software Engineers are not the ones with the best technical skills, but those with good enough technical skills to be able to understand how systems work AND good enough soft skills to work together with other people as a team.
