You remember seeing vivid colors when you shot the image, but suddenly the image on screen looks flat. You don’t realize this but your computer screen has a much smaller gamut than what you can see. The only thing that comes close to the gamut people can see are expensive OLED monitors, but they still cannot show the range we can see.
This problem gets even worse when you decide to print a photograph. Why? For one reason, your photograph will never have any areas brighter than the paper it’s printed on. Monitors don’t have that problem. And depending on the kind of printing technology, the only colors it can show are the ones that can be made by mixing the four or six different inks in the printer, or by the chemical elements that change color in the photo emulsion on the photographic paper. Regardless of which technique, you are still seeing an image that is reproduced by letting available light pass through a substance that filters the light and reflects less back to your eyes.
