Prom is an event where people try to actively find someone to go with. Most of these people are not even dating yet! So being first choice, second choice or even 5th choice shouldn't matter much. The only thing he could choose a girl on in by their looks and not even their personalities. So yes, you ended up being second to this other girl. But that might end up due to personal preferences. For example, hair-color, eye-color, slightly taller/shorter, etc. None of these things really matter in the end. I'd say that this prom is a great chance to get to know the guy on a more personal level. Get to know his personality, see if he matches your own. And if you do match, you can start actually dating afterwards.
Especially with things such as a prom where there's pressure to get a date, the thought that being second is un-acceptable is very short sighted. Yes, it's not ideal and possibly hurtful because you're not the best special snowflake among the snow. But he hasn't really gotten to know you either! Show him who you are, and prove that you're the best snowflake out there! If you think being second choice is bad, think back to when you were just a smaller child. and the teacher said to pick a partner to play a game with. Most kids would just randomly pick someone until everyone had someone. during those times you would be the 15th choice! I know it’s somewhat unfair to compare this, but it’s still similar. For prom you’re asked to find a partner. being 2nd choice is not bad at all I’d say.
