In the end, I found a friend who became more and he helped me and is still helping me but now is my husband. Let’s say you take the perfect photograph. On your camera’s memory card is an image that has the perfect composition. You look at it on your screen and you are happy with the way it looks right out of the camera. The lighting is perfect. The contrast, focus, color saturation, all of those are perfect. You think to yourself, I don’t need to bother with Photoshop because it is flawless. So you send it out to a photolab or a print shop to get a nice 14x17 print and it comes back and suddenly all of the magic is gone. What you saw in not what you got. But why?
Good computer monitors are manufactured to show as much range and gamut visible to the human eye as technically possible without being rediculously expensive. But they can only show you a certain amount of the information in the image from your camera. So your monitor too has a range. You can adjust the range so that objects in dark areas have more detail, but then the detail in bright areas gets blown out. Adjust the range so that the bright areas have more detail and you crush the details in the dark areas. The same is true for colors.
