Although we can adapt well to these systems, partly by developing specific social formulas (think of how easily we talk over the phone and how those conversations are different from collocated conversations or video conferenced conversations), we will never mistake these for the real thing. For exactly the same reasons that we don't enjoy teleconferencing as much as collocated collaboration and conversation, videoconferencing fails as a perfect solution. Until we can develop media that either enhances our experience in virtual worlds beyond that of the real world (e.g. Snow Crash) or provides us a very high fidelity approximation of reality, we will continue to meet face to face.
I'm not so sure that profit is the single mediator here (as suggested by a previous commentator). My field, that of Computer Supported Cooperative Work, is a trailblazer in virtual collaboration, both in theory and in practice. Unfortunately, what we've discovered is that it's very, very hard to create technologically-mediated experiences that approach the value of face-to-face meetings. We have begun to think instead of how we can provide extra value in virtual environments, allowing people to do things that they can't in real life.
