Young children are easily distracted and it is well understood that learning is hampered by distraction. Fantasies and cartoon and superheroes serve the purpose of holding on to that precious attention to teach morality, science, history, manners, and just about everything else by blending these into stories. Most fairy tales are morality plays. As to telling children that life is full of struggles, for heaven's sake why? As long as you have the ability to shield them from the grim reality of modern life and while they are still capable of holding on to their innocence, it would be cruel to rob them of hope, of the feeling that the world is a worthwhile place to grow up in, of the promise that dad and mom will take care of everything. Children often bring out our best behaviours in this vital phase of growing up.
They all get to see the struggle gradually and eventually as they enter school and begin to develop independent inquiry. In the scale of human existence, they will see it for sixty years or more of their lifetime. I think the fallacy of this question is that cultivating a culture of peace and human rights depends on feelings. It doesn’t. It simply takes discipline and expectations. We expect that people are going to stop when when they approach stop signs and traffic lights, whether they feel like doing so or not. Most human responses to conflict are nonviolent. Family members have conflicts with each others and are rarely violent with each other, the same is true in most areas of our lives. People look at the Bosnian war and the Rwandan genocide and they learn that Serbs, Croats and Muslims, Hutus and Tutsis had lived side by side and even intermarried and wonder what happened.
