Well, here's something to consider: Out of those three films, Dilwale was the only disappointing one, box-office wise, and it still made about 140 crore in India and 170 crore overseas. I think 310 crore is nothing to sniff at. Happy New Year broke all kinds of records, hitting the 200 crore mark in India and was a bona fide hit. Chennai Express before that hit the 200 crore mark quickly and was for a while the 4th highest grossing film ever in Bollywood. Why all the figures? To back up that these films SELL. They may be what some would term low-IQ, but the truth is that not everyone is looking for high-IQ movies. Some people (a whole lot of them really, based on box office) like light, free, easy, funny, good music, great dancing films that make them, for a few hours, forget the sadness in their own lives.
In all likelihood, SRK makes these films because they have a history of being big hits and paying bills, which in turn allows other projects such as the upcoming "Fan" and "Raees" which are promising to be extremely interesting endeavors--but they are not guaranteed sellers. SRK has made many fascinating non-low-IQ films, but, except for Devdas, India hasn't always appreciated them. In the past, they haven't SOLD as well as the others. :) During the Dilwale press junket to UK, Shah Rukh Khan told British news anchors that he makes the "hit" type masala films in order to be able to pursue other films. Films like Swades, My Name is Khan, Asoka--all films "elevated" intellectually above HNY, Dilwale and the like.
