When you're a male, you are raised to find a woman, marry her and have children. Even when you're still a little kid, adults joke about it all the time : "Oh, he will be such a ladies man", "She's cute, why don't you talk to her"... When you finally say to the world : "No, I'll marry a man", you infringe a silent rule. You break one of your gender related obligations. It's not for nothing if homophobes are obsessed with anal sex : a man has to penetrate a woman and being penetrated is perceived as an inadmissible inversion, something shameful because women are seen as inferior and the penetration is one of many markers of inferiority and submission.
Furthermore, the more you step away from what a man is supposed to look and behave and the more you'll encounter homophobia. You don't need to be gay to be called a fag : it can happen if you're seen as too effeminate, regardless of your sexual orientation. It's also the reason why some homosexuals with internalized homophobia don't want to date effeminate gays and despise them, arguing that they give a bad impression to the gays. To sum up : there are numerous implicit rules regarding how you're supposed to look and behave according to your gender and homophobia is one of many ways to enforce these rules. With that in mind, you easily understand why our struggles are closely related to the ones trans people face and why we should work with them. And also, since trans people break these rules even more than us, you'll understand why transphobia is so severe and why trans people face so much discrimination and violence.
