My home town is, politely put, economically challenged. It’s a burned out brick factory town along the Hudson that hasn’t really had much of an economy since mill work moved south in the 60s. I was lucky enough to dodge the crushing depression and rampant unemployment by leaving town on a scholarship. Too many of my buddies from high school weren’t so lucky. Some found work. Some found less legal means of earning a living. My friends Don and Eddie had established a moderately lucrative career even before graduating high school of breaking into cars and stealing whatever they could. If the keys were handy, they stole the car. They weren’t career criminals enough to have the connections sell stolen cars - they just drove them around, and abandoned them… what used to be called ‘joyriding’ but is now grand theft auto.
One night, not long after graduation, they were caught driving a stolen car. There was a chase. The worse/dumbest part was that Don was actually carrying a *gun*. And the moron tried to shoot out the tires of the police car (at least, that’s his story). They wrecked the car, and ran into the woods. The next morning, they showed up at the home of another friend. He hid them in his basement for about a day and a half…until his mother found out there were fugitives in her basement. And made Don and Eddie turn themselves in.
