Most importantly, the group of, ahem, vociferous young women might have managed to convince everyone on social media, but they were unsuccessful in changing the perception of the older woman involved. So yes, a commotion was created and aunty was intimidated, but their end goal of preaching women’s rights to the ignorant remained unfulfilled. For, in this case, the ignorant one is the aunty and as most people on social media are already aware of what feminism is and they need no more education.
The sad thing is that this aunty isn’t the only Indian who believes that parents should control their daughters for their dresses and for their behaviour. Several women grow up conditioned to believe that they should walk with their heads down, should they invite trouble upon themselves. It is impossible to change their years-old beliefs by being derisive to them. You have to be compassionate, empathetic and mature enough to understand that hatred cannot be countered with hatred.
