Don was convicted of grand theft and attempted murder (for shooting at the police). He’s still in prison. Eddie was convicted of grand theft, and served something like 10 years. Once he was released, he was immediately deported to Honduras, where he was born, but had not seen since he was 4. This was under Clinton - so much for soft on criminals and immigrants, eh?
Since my friend who took them in was not involved in the crime, and neither Don or Eddie revealed where they hid for 36 hours (they were picked up at the house when they surrendered, but the story was that they had spent the intervening time hiding in the woods and had just shown up), he was never charged with harboring a fugitive or any other consequence. But he did try to keep in touch with them in prison, and even sent Eddie money in Honduras. Was it from guilt because his mom made them surrender? Maybe. Given how young and stupid we were all at the time, I probably would have done exactly the same thing, and my parents would probably have done the same thing, too. Thank god I didn’t live near the woods.
